거무죽죽, 허여멀건, 푸르딩딩...
1. 얼굴이 '거무죽죽하다'는 '혈색이 안 좋다'라는 의미겠죠?
A : I think he has a liver problem. He looks so dark.
B : He looks okay to me.
2. 우리말에 자주 등장하는 '허여멀건 국'이라는 표현은 '건더기보다는 국물이 많은 국'이라는 의미입니다. 그리고 '까다로운 성격'은 '뭔가를 꼭꼭 잘 집어내는'이라는 의미로 바꾸면 됩니다.
A : Can you call this beef soup? Where is beef?
B : Come on, you are so picky.
3. '샛노랗다'는 표현도 자주 씁니다. 즉, '노란색이 짙다'라는 의미입니다. 그리고 '색깔 + ish'는 '~색 종류인' 정도의 의미가 됩니다.
A : Look at these ginkgo leaves, they are deep yellowish.
B : Not yet, they should be more yellowish.
4. '촌스럽다'는 boorish라고 합니다. 그리고 상대의 의견에 반대할 때는 간단히 Not me. 라고 하면 됩니다.
A : Look at this. It's too boorish.
B : Not me.
5. 빨간 립스틱을 바르고 학교에 가는 딸에게 엄마가 한마디 하시네요. '시뻘겋게 바르고'라는 표현은 '야하다'라고 옮길 수 있지요. too gaudy라고 하면 됩니다. '학생이 그게 뭐야?'라는 표현도 '그렇게 하고 학교에 간다고?'라고 하면 자연스럽습니다.
A : Hey, look at your lips. Too gaudy. Don't tell me you go to school like that.
B : There you go again, Mama.
6. 타박상으로 인해 눈 주위가 '푸르딩딩하다'라는 표현은 '눈 주위에 검게 원이 생겼다'고 표현하는 것이 재미있죠?
A : What's up? You have dark rings around your eye.
